The prominent Altes Museum in the huge Berliner Museum Island was the first museum. Conceived in the beginning of the 19th century, it is the result of a then growing bourgeois class, which at the time was developing a new relationship with the art and the importance of its public access to citizens.
The architect in charge was none other than Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the Altes Museum, among the most distinguished in neoclassicism, is considered his career high point. Since 1998 the Collection of Classical Antiquities has displayed its Greek collection, including the treasury, on the ground floor. Special exhibitions are displayed on the second floor of the museum.
