Berlin is a city in constant and frenetic change. The metamorphosis in some corners happens so fast that even locals can’t keep up. And even though the boom can be a sign of life and creativity, it does not always come for the good. Often external investments and the process of gentrification that accompany growth bring little benefit to those who have long lived and work in the neighborhood. In terms of business, it is difficult for the small fishes to suddenly have to compete with sharks.
In the last years we have seen many of our favorite places close down, giving space to boring chains and fancy restaurants. A way to resist it is to give our support to those honest and beloved ones still working their way out there. Places that helped Berlin gain the great fame it has. When we wrote in a post back in 2016 that Bastard is the best breakfast in town it was not in exaggeration. Both the local and international media never ceased to acclaim this place as a piece of heaven. Those who have tasted know this is a paradise of morning delights. And for a very fair price! Therefor it is with sadness that we watch their closed doors – once always full of people waiting for a table. What was meant to be a simple swap of tiles became a bad dream. Now, to put the café back to work a major renovation is required. And as a small and honest place, they don’t have enough cash saved to back it up. Their economic situation is disastrous and the chances of reopening are getting smaller and smaller.
