For the first time presented in this form in Berlin, the group exhibition “This Is Not a Palm Tree” focuses on the work of young protagonist artists of the contemporary art scene in Albanian and Kosovar. The 17 artists on display attempt to approach the multi-layered manifestations of collectivized memory and national identity, which play currently an imperative role in the present art production of these two young countries.

1- Islanded by the wall
Based in the middle of the Soviet territory the West-Berlin was a capitalist island in communist land. Surrounded by 155 km of wall, there were 302 Observation Towers guarded by more the 11.000 soldiers from the GDR.
2- Jure capital, not the government’s seat
The isolation of the West Berlin made it unattractive to many and complicated to manage. Besides plenty wealthy and middle class families that left, from 1949 to 1990 the capital was transfer to Bonn, leaving a lot of empty spaces.

Flat and full of historical monuments the marathon path of Germany’s capital is known by runner from all around the planet as super pleasant. Besides passing by sightseeing like the Siegesaule, Brandenburg Tor and TV Tower the way goes through really nice green areas such as the beautiful Tiergarten Park.
And as Christopher McDougal said “The reason we race isn’t to beat each other, but to be with each other”. So come join this celebration – as runner or watcher.
