It’s been almost 30 years since August became the month of dance for Berlin. In a time when the wall still divided the city in two a festival was born to help the West-Berlin dance scene develop. Young, provocative and multifarious Tanz im August has grown and matured over the years. It gained more and more international participants and consolidated itself as one of the most important events for contemporary dance and perfomance.

In its 29th edition the festival features the participation of 150 artists from 21 different countries. Between the opening last Wednesday and the closing on September the 2nd 69 showings will take place at 11 venues all across Berlin. It will present a total of 28 productions – including 3 world premieres and 14 German premieres. A rich and representative panorama of the trends and movements of dance in Germany and in the world. In honor to the Spanish choreographer La Ribot guests will have access to the retrospective Occuuppatiooon!, which presents the work of the artist between 1993-2016.

Besides the showings the audience can also enjoy discussions, films, parties and the Festivals Library with a selection of books chosen by participants.

“We invite the audience to embark on a near month-long adventure guided by the passion, imagination and intelligence of dance artists. Many of our visiting artists are addressing gender, sexuality, the status of the body, and how these identities and issues intersect with race, class, geopolitics, ability or disability, and other societal realities. We welcome the opportunity to experience and discuss these challenging topics together with the audience, artists and inspiring moderators during the festival.” Virve Sutinen, artistic director of Tanz im August
