Janine Amstel House Hostel Berlin

Meet the staff of the Amstel House as they share their secret Berlin hot spots and off the beaten track travel tips with you. And their secret super powers. And their celebrity crush… This month’s staff member featured is one of our most cheerful colleagues, Janin!

I am like a boomerang- I leave and after a while I return. You could almost say that the world is my home and my backpack ‘Jack’ is my closest friend. We have been ‘Globetrotters’ for the last five years, but at some point we came back home after our adventures. It is very important for me to laugh and to be crazy about the little things, that people and the world have to offer. I like painting, creating things, spoiling myself and cycling, feeling the wind, my pulse racing and singing along to music. This makes me feel free 😀

1. What do you love about Berlin?
The multicultural, the east-west tradition and the fact that it is a green city.

How do you call it, if people are excessive drinking and they wear weird clothes:

Munich: Octoberfest
Collogne: Carneval
and in Berlin: Lifestyle!

2. What’s your favourite hot spot in Berlin?
I like Tempelhofer field, because it’s just amazing to walk over an old Airport and have soo much open space – within a city. But most of all I like the fact that I can see the shape of the clouds 🙂

3. What’s your favourite hot spot in Moabit?
I like to sit and walk along the ‘Spree’ (Berlin’s river ;)) My favourite Bar is ‘Mauerwerk’ and my favourite Cafe is ‘Tiree’.

4. What do you like most about working at the Amstel House Hostel Berlin?
This is the third time I’ve started working at the Amstel…do I have to say more??

I have been a traveller and I stayed in many hostels. I enjoy treating people in a way that I would like to be treated. Once I advised a person on what he could do in Berlin, and as I told him this, I started to get really excited. He left with a big excited smile on his face. When I saw him two days later he was so grateful about the advice and happy about his stay. That’s what I like, sharing happiness;)!! I also enjoy working with the awesome Amstel Team!

5. What’s the last place you travelled to and what did you like best?
In summer ’14 I worked in a cute, small hostel in Doolin / Ireland . I love the town, the people and the nature. The Cliffs of Moher are stunning and the Aran Islands are so peaceful. But mostly I love and miss the SEA!!

6. Favourite quote:

‘To thine own self be true’ (W. Shakespeare)

7. What is your secret super power?
I am a gifted sleeper 😉

8. If you could sing a song on the Voice of Germany, what would it be?
‘I wish I was a punk rocker’ / Sandi Thom

9. Who is your celebrity crush?
Charlie Chaplin: He makes me laugh, he shows me how the world works and he touches my emotions. He is not afraid of making a fool out of himself and he tells the truth.

10. What 3 items would you bring to a deserted island other than food?Apfelschorle (Apple juice with sparkling water), hammock, soap-bubbles.
