Let’s be honest. Traveling solo requires a different mind set than travelling with a friend or partner. Without a partner in crime, it can be hard at times but it can also be life changing ah-mazing! No safety net. Just you! You making new friends. You calling all the shots. Your very own adventure. Here are our tips for single travelers. For those of you who want to embark on a solo adventure but don’t quite know how yet.
STAY AT A GREAT HOSTEL
Ok. Hello open door! But seriously. Hostels are much better suited for meeting people than anonymous hotels. Do some research and stay at a friendly hostel with an open lobby, communal kitchen, happy hour and tendency to organise joint trips, bbq’s, pub crawls, walking tours etc. At the Amstel House Hostel Berlin we offer all of the above and our friendly staff is famous for linking likeminded travelers that often results in long lasting friendships.
We’ve even heard from a Canadian couple that we linked years ago at our bar. They now have a sweet love baby! The proof is in the pudding!
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Keep your options open but make some sort of plan before you leave. Decide what you want to see when you’re there and book your first few nights and a really nice hostel as a starting point. It will give you peace of mind and freedom at the same time.
TAKE A COURSE
Love cooking? Take a local cooking course. At the beach? Try your luck at surfing or diving. Don’t speak the local language? Sign up for a basic course. Whatever interests you, you will meet likeminded locals and travelers!
BOOK A TOUR
There’s no better way to meet fellow travelers in a flash than to go on a tour. You’re in a small group with the same interest for a certain amount of time and quickly see who you click with.
TRAVEL LIGHT
Make sure you pack light so you can manage your luggage by yourself easily. One backpack and one handbag should be more than enough. We already created some handy packing tips for a Berlin trip for you. And here’s a great list with space saving tips.
