The first decades of the 20th century came to Berlin as crazy and hectic news. The World War I, the German Revolution and the beginning of the Weimer Republic happened all during this short period of history. As a voice of its time, the art scene of the city was loud, revolutionary and fast transforming and the affluence of such cultural production gave space to a flood of artistic movements.

First, in 1898, the Berlin Secession was founded to represent young modern artists especially linked with impressionism. A group of expressionists soon come to challenged it, establishing the New Secession; which clashed also four years later giving birth to the Free Secession. The catastrophe of the WWI warmed up the scene and, inspired by the German Revolution, the November Group aroused, strongly attached by socialists ideas and radical points of view.

This rich artistic jam is the topic of the colorful exhibition Turn of an Era – From the Berlin Secession to the November Group, dedicated to the radical transformations in Berlin art between 1898 and 1919. From impressionism to expressionism, from cubism, futurism to New Objectivity and constructivism: the Bröhan-Museum illustrates those changes with about 250 art works.
