Only two metro stations away from the Amstel House lies one of the most emblematic architectural symbols of the post-war period in West Berlin, the heritage complex Zentrum am Zoo, former industrial, commercial and office buildings. Constructed in the 50’s the assembly currently embraces, among others, the trendy and world’s first concept-mall Bikini Berlin.
Although the name might seem as mod as the mall, it dates back to the time when the building was brand new and the tiny pieces of clothing caused rampage. The massive concrete block with huge glass windows was once separated by columns into a top and a bottom part, alluding to the then scandalous beachwear. Locals quickly nicknamed it Bikinihaus.
Since 2014 Bikini is home to national and international boutiques, concept- and flagship-stores, fashion pop-ups and gastronomic places, all carefully curated to be part of world’s first concept-mall. The best part however is at the 10th and top floor, where the stylish Monkey Bar takes visitors‘ breath away – and for many reasons. At arrival’s first sight the nice design quickly impresses: concrete floor, large hanging plants and industrial lamps give the place a great stylish atmosphere. At the bar queue what gets our attention is the beauty of the bartenders preparing the next thing to marvel us: the crazy tasty cocktails. With a menu full of temptations it is difficult to choose. But it does not matter. At the end every choice is surly delicious. To complete the joy Monkey Bar offers a panoramic view over the beautiful park Tiergarten, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the Berlin Zoo – with a bit of luck one gets to see some orangutan chilling around.
Needless to say that sunset is the most stunning time to enjoy the qualities of this place, but also the most crowded. As the prices are not very friendly to backpackers’ pocket – but the place definitely worth a look – we recommend a visit to Monkey Bar at Bikini Berlin for a kick start drink of a night in great style.
