If there’s one city in Europe that has cult status when it comes to movies, cinephiles and cinemas, it’s Berlin. From underground GDR art-house cinemas to more fancy and well known arthouse cinemas in the heart of Kreuzberg, Berlin has a soft spot for the arthouse films. Let us take you on a tour to the Amstel House Hostel Berlin’s three favourite arthouse cinemas across Berlin.
Kino INTIMES
Look for the eye-catching neon sign on Boxhagenerstrasse in Friedrichshain and you can’t miss this classic cinema. Founded in 1909, this grungy yet friendly art house cinema with vintage flair and 83 comfortable seats shows international art house films as well as kids classics.
Boxhagener Straße 107, Friedrichshain
Odeon Cinema
Boutique neighbourhood cinema Odeon in the heart of Schöneberg was the first cinema to show movies in its original language which adds so much in atmosphere and experience. It still does to this day. Most movies in Germany are dubbed in German. The red velvet chairs, the home made brownies and the small viewing spaces make it rather charming!
Hauptstrasse 116, Schöneberg
Fsk Cinema
Another independent arthouse gem in Berlin inside a spectacular glass building near Oranienplatz. Fsk shows award winning independent films and documentaries. Not only local movies are selected, a wide range of French, Spanish, Italian and East European movies find their way to the screens as well. Fsk also holds regular events like debates, workshops and lectures based on movies.
Segitzdamm 2, Kreuzberg
